The Revolution and the Empire

by the writers and historians of the 19th century

Heralded by the Revolution and then by the Napoleonic Empire, the 19th century is the century of History and of historians. A new period opens up, constituting a viewpoint from which the past will be understood, giving the tools for thinking the future. It is indeed at this period that were developed the methods, schools and documentary sources that form the basis of our studies today.

This database offers a triple interest for students and research-workers. Historiographical interest first: the corpus allows the analysis, from the study of a given period, of the modern historical methods that are being constituted at that time. An historical interest, secondly, giving a transversal approach (here especially pertinent) to the events, to the different analyses, to all the testimonies of the very rich period that goes from the Revolution to the Empire. Literary interest, finally: the history of the 19th century is a science but is also an art, exploiting taste and talent in well-written forms. At this time in France, the historical texts become a literary genre as such.
